Over the weekend, Wayne Onderdonck received a call from Abilene Wylie football coach Hugh Sandifer.
One of the first things Sandifer told Onderdonck was that he was glad to have him on his team this time around.
Considering the way Onderdonck played in Alvarado's last two playoffs meetings with Abilene Wylie, Sandifer should be thrilled to have Onderdonck as a member of the North squad in the Texas High School Coaches Association 2012 All-Star Football Game.
As a junior, Onderdonck carried 19 times of 110 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-21 regional round playoff victory over Abilene Wylie. In 2011, Onderdonck rushed for 229 yards on 34 carries and scored once in a 31-0 win over Abilene Wylie in the same round.
The contest will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at San Antonio's Alamodome in conjunction with the 80th Texas High School Coaches Association Coaching School which begins Sunday.
“Honestly, I didn't even know I had been nominated until coach (Jeff) Dixon told me I was playing in the game,” Onderdonck said. “Considering all the great players on our team, it's a great honor to be representing Alvarado.”
Onderdonck has talked with both Sandifer and one of his assistant coaches about the game. During the conversations, Onderdonck made it clear that he will do anything to help the team from running the ball to serving as deep snapper on special teams.
“I know I'm
going to want to be out there on the field,” he said. “I love playing football and I want to see what I can do against some of the best in the state.”
Despite earning first-team all-state honors from the Associated Press, Onderdonck only had one scholarship offer from a school in Alabama.
He passed that up for a preferred walk-on spot at Midwestern State.
In 2011, Onderdonck helped Alvarado to its best season ever with a 14-1 record and a loss in the Class 3A Division I state title game.
As a senior, he set single-season school records for rushing yards (3,018) and touchdowns (31).
“I want to represent Alvarado Tuesday night,” Onderdonck said. “Because without the school, my teammates, coaches and fans none of this would be possible. I owe them a lot.”
