In May, a record number 21 Alvarado High School tennis players competed in a state-ranking tournament in Mansfield known as the ZAT tournament.
As part of a deal that coach Matt McCleary struck with the tennis team members, he agreed to have his hair cut into a Mohawk, in honor of the Indians, if the program sent 20 players or more to the event. "Cutting my hair makes me nervous, but the excitement of having so many players compete in such a significant tournament means we're only getting better and that makes this occasion well worth it. Frankly, I hope my hair stays in a Mohawk all next season, for the right reasons," McCleary said to the team and their parents at the end of the season. The team exceeded the already large number of players who competed.
Previously, the record for Alvarado-player attendance stood at 12, which was in November in Arlington. Several players had excellent results and are looking forward to furthering their tennis careers over the summer ZAT tournament schedule.
