Ministers begin community-wide alliance (Posted 12/15/2009 11:50 am)
The Alvarado Area Ministerial Alliance held an organizational meeting last week at the First Methodist Church. Ten pastors from area churches gathered for meal and conversation. The pastors agreed future meetings would promote a cooperative community-wide ministry, Rev. Gene Gurley said. “In addition to nurturing a spirit of unity among area Christians, the association will provide peer support for pastors,” the Alvarado First Methodist Church pastor said. “According to the ministers present, there are times when one pastor needs another pastor, outside of the congregation, to share ideas and concerns.” Future speakers will offer advice and training for pastors seeking help in their ministries. Others may talk of mission opportunities and service projects in Alvarado. Many area pastors present are bi-vocational, and working during the day can be difficult to meet with other clergy. It was decided that the alliance would hold its meetings at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The AAMA is sponsoring a benefit to support the area food and clothes pantry, Helping Hands for Jesus. A free concert will be held at 7 p.m. on January 23 at First Methodist of Alvarado with donations of money, food and clothes will being accepted. The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Jan. 7 in the Family Life Center of First Methodist Church of Alvarado, 301 S. Spears, St. For more information call Rev. Gene Gurley at 817-980-6492.
