| No supply list this year (Posted 7/13/2010 10:47 am) By Christopher Amos The bad news is, school starts in one month. The good news is, parents won’t have to print off a school supply list and buy a cart full of stuff for their student. School will be back in session Tuesday, August 24, and this is about the time the Alvarado Star prints the Alvarado ISD shopping list for area parents. This year, all of that is being taken care of. AISD superintendent Dr. Chester Juroska reported at the end of the school year that Uncle Sam is going to pick up the tab on pencils, pens, binders, paper, tissue, crayons, hand sanitizer and all the typical items parents normally have to load up on before the first day of school. “The federal government sent stimulus money to each state, which then sent the money to local school districts,” Juroska explained. “We, as a school district, decided to use some of these funds to buy school supplies for the 2010-2011 school year.” Some of the stimulus money will be used for backpacks. The school district, with the help of area businesses, hopes to equip each student with a backpack. Businesses wanting to help sponsor backpacks for students can contact the AISD administration office at 817-783-6800. “Everyone is feeling the effects of the slow economy, and I hope this gesture will help your family at a time when parents and guardians are hit hard by purchases they make at the beginning of school,” the superintendent added. “Be assured school supplies are something you do not need to worry about.” Last year, according to the National Retail Federation, the average parent spent $81.83 on school supplies. The figure was $204.67 per child when clothes and accessories were added. === Follow all the school news and Indian and Lady Indian action this school year with the Alvarado Star.
