Community can take part in award (Posted 2/2/2010 01:31 pm)
At the end of each year, Alvarado Independent School District honors its teachers and staff with a breakfast and awards ceremony.

This year, the district is asking for the community’s help.

In the past, paraprofessionals have been honored by campuses, much like the teachers. However, school secretaries, aides, nurses and other campus staff are now eligible for the Indian Pride Award.

Any district staff member that is not a teacher has an opportunity to win an Indian Pride Award and nominations can come from a fellow staff member, student, parent or community member.

“In the past, staff in our technology department, operations, special ed or any other staff members not on a campus were not afforded the opportunity to be honored,” information officer Tommy Brown said. “This system not only gives them the opportunity, but it makes it even more special when they know someone outside of the school family can nominate them.”

There is not a specific number of Indian Pride Awards to be awarded each year. It is based on the number and quality of the nominations.

“There will be cases where some years there is not one given to a worker in technology or operations or a particular campus,” Brown said. “This is not intended to be a campus or department person of the year. The Indian Pride Awards are designed for our non-teaching staff as a whole.”

Brown said he would love to get 200 nominations and hand out awards to each person, but by limiting the number of awards the honor is more meaningful.

The nomination form can be found on the district’s website on a link titled Indian Pride Award. Visit www.alvaradostar.net for a link to the school district site.
